One of the real voices on soprano saxophone, Zoot Sims is perhaps the most swinging saxophonist ever. His soprano sound is rich and full of life. The stories about him playing endless sessions with not a sign of fatigue or an absence of ideas are legendary. The guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli turned me on to this track on this Dave McKenna disc on the Chiaroscuro label, and it’s been a favorite of mine for years. It swings and it has soul. It’s a straight-ahead workout on dominant 7th chords and the melodic ideas are endless, as is the impeccable rhythmic phrasing. Play this often and your sound and attack will thank you. The tempo is quarter note= 250.
