I often make what I guess you could call “experimental” mouthpieces. I may be exploring new tools, new chamber designs or new facings and tip opening. many of these pieces turn out to be wonderful players but, for one reason or another, I don’t put them into production. The reason usually has nothing to do with the quality and sound of the mouthpiece. I often incorporate what I discover into other designs.

These “one-off” pieces usually stay here in the shop and go out the door after a player stops by and plays it. I rarely put them on the website or offer them publicly. I thought I might change that a bit.

This fabulous player is made on the Open Sky 2 platform (blank) but has nothing in common with its beginnings.

The chamber is very big but not wide-open. The sidewalls are dramatically undercut and the tip is .070. In addition, the facing is short. The result is a rich, darker sound with # 3 1/2 reeds, which play with ease. The intonation is amazing. The short facing really makes this piece very player-friendly.
